Name:Marceline Winters

Age:15

Member of: (The Capitol, District 1, 2 etc.)District 10

If your from the Capitol what profession are you?: alien

Appearance:Marceline has black, curly hair that she tends to keep loose. Her eyes are an icy blue-gray color that stand out, like any person with black hair and blue eyes seems to. She's very pale, like rice paper, almost like a ghost. She tends to wear a smile, masking any pain that she might feel and foolng her enemies into thinking she's soft. She has a soft, feminine look, even though she will kill you when you aren't looking.

Personality:Had Marceline grown up normally, she would've turned out very sweet. That's how she was as a child. But no more. She has a sarcastic, cynical outlook on everything. Her social skills aren't great, so she says blunt truths that no one wants to hear without even noticing it. She's very quiet, but if you ever get to know her, which only one person ever has, she becomes someone that will never, ever hurt you. She's often unwilling to smile, but when she does smile, you're either about to die or about to receive an ally.

History:When she was four years old, Marceline's parents died in a tragic attempt to revolt in the Capitol that never was noticed by anyone, since it was stamped out before it really started. When they died, they left Marceline as the only caretaker of her little sister Evie. She shielded Evie from everything about the Hunger Games and the Capitol for as long as she could, but eventually had to take her to the reaping. Every year, Marceline took out tesserae for herself and Evie, but never let Evie take any, even though they were on the brink of death. Then, when Evie turned 12 and Marceline was 13, Evie was chosen to compete. She had taken out tesserae in secret. Marceline attempted to volunteer, but her quiet voice was lost in the crowd. Evie was, surprisingly, one of the last four, and died at the hands of a Career. Ever since then, Marceline has hoped to be chosen for the Hunger Games, not to win, but to show the Captiol that they don't own her, and avenge Evie's death. She holds no mercy for people, but every time she hunts and kills, she prays for the animal's spirit.

Hi Marceline! Welcome to the Character Development Center! Here's your first round of questions! Please include the questions (bolded) in your reply. Good luck~

1. Who cared for Marceline and Evie after their parents died? Where did they live?

2. How did Marceline feel about not being able to volunteer for Evie? Did she feel guilty that she couldn't be louder?

3. How did Marceline cope with the loss of her sister? What was their relationship like before her death? What kinds of things did they do together?

1. Who cared for Marceline and Evie after their parents died? Where did they live?
Marceline fended for herself and her sister after her parents death. They lived wherever they could hide, mainly in the woods, but occasionally in abandoned houses and farms.

2. How did Marceline feel about not being able to volunteer for Evie? Did she feel guilty that she couldn't be louder?
If she was being completely honest, almost grateful. But mostly very guilty, and it made it twice as hard for her to watch as Evie died. She felt excptionally guilty, and after that day almost stopped talking altogether.

3. How did Marceline cope with the loss of her sister? What was their relationship like before her death? What kinds of things did they do together?
Marceline became closed off to the world, silent, sullen, and very pessimistic. Before Evie's death, the two were like two peas in a pod. After the death of their parents, all they had left was each other, and the need to survive overcame any sibling rivalries that they had had. They didn't have a lot of time for recreation, but they hunted together, with Evie getting plants and Marceline, being the better shot, getting meat. They also swam and played with animals that weren't good for eating, like cats, dogs, and horses.

Thank you for the warm welcome, April! I hope my responses answer your questions well. Also, thanks for the pointers on how to set up my reply. See you around! alien

Your answers are lovely! Have some more questions~

1. Since Marceline was only 4 when her parents died, how exactly did she manage to care for herself and her little sister? Did they receive help from anyone?

2. How did Marceline learn to hunt? What kinds of weapons does she use, and how did she get them?

3. How long did Marceline go without speaking after the loss of her sister? Has she started speaking again? Why or why not?

1. Since Marceline was only 4 when her parents died, how exactly did she manage to care for herself and her little sister? Did they receive help from anyone?
For a while, Marceline stayed with an old family friend very close to her mother for sleep and food. She remained very independant and refused to become attached, knowing that the inevitable was her leaving. Marceline and Evie ran away when Marceline was 9, Evie 8. After that, they occasionally stole from the richer people in District 10 but mostly used the natural resources. The family friend continued to keep an eye on the girls until his death when Marceline was 11.

2. How did Marceline learn to hunt? What kinds of weapons does she use, and how did she get them?
Marceline taught herself how to hunt after finding some abandoned snares and an old knife near a tree. She knew poaching was very illegal, probably more in District 10 than anywhere else, but the need to survive is powerful. She uses a knife, usually a small, sharp one that is good for throwing and killing up close, and if food is especially scarce a bow and arrow, which gets food faster than the knife but she is slightly less skilled with it due to the clumsy, hand-made design. The knives were something of a lucky find, in an abandoned farm, just barely starting to rust. The bow and arrow she made, which is probably why she is inept with it, not knowing how to make one, but knowing that food would be easier to come by with it, even if she wasn't as good with it as she was with a knife.

3. How long did Marceline go without speaking after the loss of her sister? Has she started speaking again? Why or why not?
Marceline went for at least a year without speaking, and still doesn't speak to other people, after the death of Evie. She talks to the birds and herself, listens to the mockingjays that her sister loved. The only reason she pulled herself out of her silent state was because, when she saw the mockingjays, she remembered how Evie used to beg her to "talk" to them because they would not repeat her melodies. She speaks scarcely, only talking to things that cannot reply or when forced to speak in a trade. She would've went forever with out talking, but the need to survive once again overpowered her. She also sometimes loses her grip on sanity altogether and pretends Evie is still there, and talks to the sky. This is the only time she truly becomes a genuine, friendly person.

1. Why did Marceline and Evie run away from the family friend that was taking care of them?

2. How have Marceline and Evie avoided getting sent to an orphanage for so many years?

3. Does Marceline have any friends at all? Does she want any? Does she ever get lonely?

1. Why did Marceline and Evie run away from the family friend that was taking care of them?
They, Marceline especially, got very tired of the friend attempting to be their adoptive parent. The family friend often asked to be referred to as Dad, and his wife Mom, but both Marceline and Evie thought it was an insult to their parents memories to adopt new ones, and eventually decided it was just better to go off and fend for themselves than try to make the friends understand that they didn't want to be their children.

2. How have Marceline and Evie avoided getting sent to an orphanage for so many years?

Mostly hiding. Oftentimes they took to the woods, or old farms, or even people's yards to avoid people. After Evie was chosen for the Hunger Games, the Peacekeepers recognized that her sister and her were orphaned, and sent Marceline to an orphanage. However, after realizing how socially awkward she was, and how broken she was after Evie's death, they
thought it was better for the children of the orphanage as a whole and Marceline if she just left. It was an unique exception, and all evidence of Marceline ever being there was disposed of.

3. Does Marceline have any friends at all? Does she want any? Does she ever get lonely?
Marceline wouldn't call her "friend" a friend, more like a stalker. This boy named Justin one day got lost and wandered over the fence. Marceline was 12, and even though Evie was still alive, had no want for any company other than her sister. Justin was 13. Marceline was singing to the mockingjays, and listening to them cover the songs. Justin was fascinated by her ability, and eventually added his own tune, scaring Marceline so much she fell into the river that she was sitting on the bank of. As hard as she tried, Marceline could not get rid of him. Eventually, when Evie died, Justin was Marceline's shoulder to cry on. For a week, he just comforted her. When Marceline was over it, they made a promise to never speak of it, although when Marceline occasionally breaks down, Justin's alway there for her. However, she's perfectly fine with just Justin to talk to, and doesn't really want any, although if someone was to come along in a similar situation (orphaned and such) she wouldn't turn them away. Occasionally loneliness hits Marceline in the face, but she always has the mockingjays, the sky, and-though she won't admit it-Justin.

By the way, thank you for the compliment on my answers in the set before this one. I didn't even notice it when first reading through the questions. Anyways, thank you Smile

You are most welcome ^^ They're getting even better, keep it up~

1. Since Marceline spends all her time hiding, does she attend school? What is the extent of her education?

2. What would it take to make Marceline admit to herself that Justin is her friend? Would she ever consider him a friend? How much does she care for him, if she does at all?

3. Does Marceline have any hopes or ambitions for the future? If so, what are they? If not, why not?

1. Since Marceline spends all her time hiding, does she attend school? What is the extent of her education?
She attended school during the time she was in the orphanage, but was somewhat behind. Her father, before he died, had taught her the basics of math and language. Justin also teaches her things sometimes, because Marceline is eager to learn. She learns a lot through her own trial and error. Marceline is at about her age level in math, maybe a little above, excels in anything that has to do with language, and doesn't know, and has no wish to, anything about history.

2. What would it take to make Marceline admit to herself that Justin is her friend? Would she ever consider him a friend? How much does she care for him, if she does at all?
It would take for him to all but run away, to defy the Capitol with either words or actions. After Evie's death, anyone who complies with their rules willingly she distances herself from. Should Justin even say that he disagrees with everything the Capitol does, she would maybe start to consider him a friend. However, while Justin doesn't agree with half the things the Capitol does, he is unwilling to admit he does, and Marceline just can't bring herself to open up and trust him. Yes, in certain circumstances, she would consider him a friend. For while Justin bugs Marceline to no end, she remembers that he was the only one who could comfort her after Evie's death and, although this she will absolutely never admit, whenever she starts to drift away from where she is, is the only one who can conquer the darkness that sometimes swallows her.

3. Does Marceline have any hopes or ambitions for the future? If so, what are they? If not, why not?
As strange as it is, especially for a fairly scrawny girl from District 10, Marceline wants to be able to compete in the Hunger Games, or at least go to the Capitol. She just wants to show them that they don't own her, even if it costs Marceline her life. She also plans on, someday, getting married and having kids, just as every girl, although the more tomboyish ones like Marceline won't admit it, dreams. As a career option, she would like to be a fiction author, because while there are tons of non-fiction books about the great and almighty Capitol, there is next to no fiction, which makes her sad Crying or Very sad. However, she tries not to pinpoint too much on what she wants to do, because in this day and age, there is no such thing as definates.

Aww, shucks Embarassed. Thanks, April. I really appreciate the compliments Smile.

What was Evie's token?

Does Marceline plan to volunteer for the games? If she is placed in the games, how will she show that they don't own her?

What was her experience like in the orphanage? Did anyone try to get close to her? Any adults try to help her?

Did Marceline watch the games Evie participated in? How did her sister make it so far?

What was Evie's token?
Evie's token was a little scrap of the blanket she was wrapped in as a child. It had a picture of her whole family-parents and Marceline-sewn to the inside. It somehow withheld the Games, and was returned to Marceline when Evie died.

Does Marceline plan to volunteer for the games? If she is placed in the games, how will she show that they don't own her?
While at first, Marceline was weary of volunteering, the possibility of her doing it is becoming greater and greater with each passing day. If she is placed in the Games, she will indeed fight to the death, but she will die on her terms, and she will do every possible thing that can be done against the Capitol. She knows that, being malinourished and all, she has no chance of winning, so she will be able to talk freely about how she hunts and the woods she lives in and say the things that everyone wants to, but no one has the courage to.

What was her experience like in the orphanage? Did anyone try to get close to her? Any adults try to help her?
The orphanage, in a word, was terrible. Everyone felt sorry for her, and everyone told her about how bad they felt for her loss. Marceline, at this time, still felt like Evie could come home. She held onto that hope even after Evie's death, until the winner was declared and the coffin lay at her feet. And then she felt mad at everyone-part of the reason they just let her go. They were afraid she'd murder them in their sleep. No one tried to get close to her, they just felt sorry for her. There were a couple of girls, older than Marceline, that acted protective of her and told people when to bug off, and for that Marceline was grateful. Most adults didn't care, but they had a teacher come in and talk to her, and sent her to therapy, but it didn't help. Marceline had lost the only thing that was left in her world, and no one understood that she didn't need or desire their help.

Did Marceline watch the games Evie participated in? How did her sister make it so far?
That was one of two Games Marceline ever watched. She watched the year before, the year she turned twelve, as well. Marceline is and was afraid of death and dying, after her parents' death. She didn't like to watch them, but she had to watch them, for Evie. She wanted to watch her sister win, even though anyone in their right mind knew Evie wouldn't. Evie made it so far in the Games because she didn't kill anyone; in total, in the Games, she killed one person, and even then, it wasn't intentional; she had set up a snare, one of the few she could set up, and the boy who got caught in the snare looked so sick that Evie took pity and killed him. She lay low most of the time, and she had an allie, a 15-year-old from District 9 named Carlyn Minster. She died a week or so before Evie did. Evie also had learned from her sister how to hunt, or had learned enough that she could get herself food. In fact, had she been more willing to kill at the end, there was a possibility that she could have come home, but Marceline prefers not to dwell on that.
