| Aspen laid in the grass outside during lunch period at school, watching the clouds sail across the sky. It was a beautiful day, and Aspen resented the fact that he had to spend it inside. He wanted to be out in the woods, enjoying the sunshine accompanied with the smell of the forest floor. It’s not that he hated school. Sure, it was boring more often than not, but he genuinely enjoyed being around people his age. He may not be the brightest light bulb in the hallway, but he got by with good enough grades. It didn’t take book smarts to cut down trees. Aspen hummed “The Hanging Tree” to himself as he watched a cloud that looked like a rabbit soared over his head, halfway obscuring the sun behind its ears. He could faintly hear the chatter of the other students in the cafeteria, but it just sounded like white noise from where he was sitting. He felt his eyelids getting heavier, and soon he was lightly dozing off, the sun warming his skin. This was the life.

| Birch didn't want to spend one more second inside, the way the blue sky was calling to her. She seized the opportunity to enjoy the nice day at lunch. She pushed one of the school doors open, and felt the sun hit her cheeks, and she smiled. What a beautiful day. Birch found a nice patch of grass to sit in and she took it. Her dress flared out all around her, and she enjoyed how the grass felt on her legs. A slight breeze blew, blowing her softly curled hair around her head, the ends of it tickled her neck. She couldn’t think of a nicer day to be missing by being in school. Birch looked around at her surroundings and saw a boy laying in the grass a little ways away from her. He looked vaguely familiar, from what she could tell from sitting so far away. Birch could hear he was humming to himself, even though she didn’t recognize the melody. He must not have noticed her being there, because it looked like he dozed off a few seconds later. Birch was enjoying his humming, but now that he dozed off, it was pretty quiet. She grabbed her music box locket and clicked it open, letting the sounds of Ave Maria take up the empty space in the air.

| There was a fluctuation in volume of the students' voices, telling Aspen one of the doors to the school opened. He wasn't dying of curiosity to see who came outside. If it was another student, he'd probably just ignore them; he was kind of out of it today. If it was a teacher, well, he'd just listen to them. He was enjoying the weather, but arguing with a teacher had some steep consequences around here. He heard light footprints behind him, and decided it was either a younger student or an older girl; most of the boys his age trodded on the ground like their muscular fathers: strong, but with no grace. Most of the girls his age still held on to their femininity enough to not inherit their fathers' gaits. The footsteps stopped, and Aspen assumed the fellow student had sat down like he had. The breeze ruffled his hair slightly, and he sighed contentedly. He closed his eyes just as a song entered his head. He didn’t recognize the tune, but then he realized the song wasn’t in his head, but in his ears. It sounded like a music box, and his interest was piqued. Aspen sat up on his elbows and craned his neck around to see the source of the music. He noticed a rather beautiful girl sitting at one of the tables, holding a locket in her hand. The wind blew her long hair around her face and neck, and Aspen couldn’t help but feel slight butterflies in his stomach. Aspen stood up and walked over to her, sitting on the opposite end of the table. “Birch, right?” He said, recognizing the girl from his classes. How had he not noticed how beautiful she was?

| Birch jumped when a voice interrupted her train of thought. She looked up and saw Aspen Ives. He was the same age as her, and he was a certified lady's man. She remembered her silly childhood crush on him from a time that seemed so far in the past. She loved to follow him home when she was younger, since he lived in a house that was "on the way" to hers. (It really wasn't on the way, but Birch tried to rationalize it that way). Then came the teenage years, and while Birch grew out of her crush for him, he grew into crushes on what seemed like every girl in school. It annoyed her how he could flirt with every girl shamelessly, and not feel any sort of emotional attachment to anyone. It seemed like a miracle when she heard he had finally gone exclusive with a girl, but, true to form, the relationship only lasted a few days. He didn’t seem like the type for commitment. "Uh...yeah. Birch Evinrude." She said to him, wondering how he remembered her name.
((I kind of stalked your Character Development thread. Hope you don’t mind!))
