| It was scary, being back in a District. For the past month or so, Mel had stuck to the woods in search of wanderers. It was a bit lonely, but Mel hadn’t really minded being out of the public eye. It gave her time to think about everything that had happened to her lately. How Donta had been killed in the Games. Then Mel had closed herself off from her family and friends. And just when she was starting to come around a bit, she’d met Taryn, who’d told her about a secret rebel railway. And Mel had gone off with a complete stranger, leaving behind her family and District 11, so she could try to stop the people who allowed a cute, sweet, wonderful 11 year old to die for their entertainment. Only it didn’t stop there, because then Mel had ended up almost getting captured by a peacekeeper, and immediately after that she’d met an amazing boy and had her first kiss, only to leave him in District 4 and never see him again. Mel often wondered if Xander even remembered who she was; if he thought about her as much as she thought about him. Probably not; he was back home, surrounded by plenty of girls that Mel was sure wouldn’t hesitate to be his girlfriend. Not that it mattered, because she would never see him again. All of Mel’s time to think had really only left her more confused than ever, so maybe it was actually a good thing that the train had broken down outside District 7, and Mel had decided to take advantage of the time to pop into town. She knew all too well how dangerous it could be, but she was dying to see a town again, and maybe she could pick up something useful while she was there. And she’d been to District 7 before, so she kind of knew her way around. That didn’t make it less scary, though, as Mel slowly made her way out of the woods and into town. She’d forgotten how different most people in District 7 looked from her; between her blonde hair, pale skin, and different clothes, Mel probably stuck out like a sore thumb. But as long as she acted like she knew what she was doing, she’d be fine…right? Right. As the woods grew more and more sparse, Mel finally made her way out from the cover of the trees and onto a path that she assumed led into town, trying (and failing) to convey a sense of total confidence, as if she walked this way every day. Hopefully the look of fear on her face wasn’t completely obvious, but she didn’t have much time to consider it; Mel had been so focused on trying to look like she knew what she was doing, that she’d completely forgotten to actually pay attention to where she was walking and subsequently managed to trip over a large rock and land facedown in the dirt. Ouch. | |

| An old logging folk song would not leave Talia’s mind, no matter how had she tried to brush it to a corner. She missed those days, out in the woods with her family. So naturally, she would be forced to exert the old song from her mind. Though half of it contained meanings she didn’t understand, or anyone for that matter. In soft whistling Talia headed down from town. She didn’t really know where she was going. Into the woods possibly? It was not that difficult to do in this particular district. Perhaps it was more difficult to do here, where she lived closer to town, but when she was young and her father was still around, it was easy because they lived far out.
Above the treetops, aching up high…From a man taking hits at the hard brown hide…
She adjusted her old raincoat. The season was a very wet one, and even though the garment was oversized and weather worn to grey, it was better than getting caught in a storm. She wore her hair in a ponytail today. Talia had gotten off her shift at the paper mill about half an hour ago. Talia hated it. The strenuous labor… And she got off easy because she was still a student. But, with every single part of her heart and her nerves in her body, she wished she could trade places with her mother. So that long twelve hour shifts did not exist to a woman that was aging. You would think time would find grace to those of age. Yet not in this world.
Flies a flock of wings, beating the wind… Startled by the shine of a steel axe head…
The whistling stopped. A loud crunch filled Talia’s ears, which were functioning well at the moment. She wasn’t very far out of town. Perhaps it was another person. She hoped with all of her heart, because she had no defenses. If it were wild dogs, or coyotes or a cougar… She rested at ease when she noticed a girl had fallen… On her face. Poor girl. Normally someone would laugh at that. But Talia was more of all worried.
And her hair. It was blonde, like her own. Even lighter! The sight almost made Talia release a loud gasp. Blonde hair was a rarity, most people in the district had a muddy brown color to their hair, as if they were all related in a sort of way. The majority had hazel eyes as well, with strong figures and shoulders, unlike herself.“Are you… Okay?” She asked worriedly, running over to the girl without making a single sound on the forest floor. | |

| If Mel had known that she was at risk of being attacked by wild dogs, coyotes, or cougars (oh my!), she would have run straight back to the train and stayed there until it left District 7. Fortunately, she was unaware of the animals’ presence, so at the moment her biggest concern was the fact that she was lying facedown on the ground. Or it was, until she found herself facing something much, much worse than an angry wild animal: another person. Now, before she’d joined the railway and before Donta was killed in the Games, Mel had always been a fairly sociable, friendly girl. But now, every person she ran into meant another chance of getting discovered. So it was needless to say she did her best to avoid strangers.
Mel pushed herself up so that she was sitting on her knees, and looked at the girl who had spoken to her without even bothering to attempt to hide the fear in her eyes. Sure, the girl had sounded concerned, but how long would it be before her concern changed into curiosity? And it was no comfort to see that the girl looked about her own age. Sure, it was better than a peacekeeper, but barely. If the girl was her own age, that meant Mel should probably recognize her from school or something, but clearly that was not the case. And it didn’t help that she looked so out of place around here. But there was nothing she could do about that now, so it was with a guarded voice that she finally managed to reply, “Oh, uh, yeah…I think so.”
Only then did Mel realize she had been so occupied with the appearance of the girl that she hadn’t even bothered to see if she actually was okay. Obviously she was still in one piece, but a quick self-assessment revealed that she had a couple of scrapes on her hands and knees, and she was covered in a good amount of dirt. Well, that was gross, but being a rebel constantly traveling between districts had made Mel rather accustomed to dirt.
Wiping her face with the back of her hand, she nodded once again at the girl. “Yeah, I’m okay…thanks.” She was dirty and scraped and in danger of being discovered as a rebel by some girl, but sure, she was okay. Mel’s heart was racing as she tried to think of what to do next. Get up and leave? She was still a bit shaken from her fall, so Mel didn’t particularly like that option. But she wasn’t crazy about the alternative either, which was to stay here with the girl who she should probably know, if she was actually from this district. Should she pretend she recognized the girl? No, that would probably just lead to even more problems, like it had in District 10 with the peacekeeper.
With a swallow, Mel forced herself to look up at the girl once again with as much confidence as she could muster (which sadly was not much). “Uh…” was the only sound that came out of her mouth. Well. So much for saying something smooth and glossing over the potentially disastrous situation. Her cheeks reddening slightly, Mel shut her mouth and looked back down at her arms and took to wiping the dirt from them. Maybe the girl would just grow tired of her and leave?

| “That’s good,” She sighed relief when she realized that everything turned out okay.
The look in her eyes when she first looked up made Talia want to retreat. She felt like she had been disturbing something, that she was unwanted, and that the girl didn’t want anyone around. The thought came to her, do I know her? And a flurry of questions began to formulate in Talia’s mind. Why did the face of this girl not evoke any sort of memory? Talia had always been the type to remember faces. Then again, there were always those few people you never had really gotten around to contacting. Even so, there was this strange air to her, like she was out of place. But the very last thing Talia would have guessed was the girl being a Rebel. The thought would be automatically doubted by her age and representation.
Talia realized that the direction the girl had been coming from was from the woods. The though made Talia wonder if this other girl liked to spend time in the woods too. Talia only did it when she knew she wasn’t at risk of getting caught. Did this stranger have the same need to be away from other people?
Talia realized that if she didn’t recognize the girl, she would probably feel embarrassed. But she wasn’t going to go off and tell a lie. That was not a characteristic that found it’s home in her heart. Not to mention she had never been good at bluffing anyways.
“No worries,” She smiled softly, lending out a hand to help her up from the ground. No worries. that was a lie. Life was just one big worry in this world. Would my little broehr get fed tonight? Will I? Hopefully the girl would not reject it, but at this moment Talia lacked the entirety of certainty. But Talia’s hands were scarred and cut by her long shifts of working on the weekends and putting in hours after school. They seemed to compete with eh fairness of her skin and was an odd sight. However, it was not uncommon in district seven; many people worked in the paper mills and had repercussions from it.
The sound the girl made was sparse of anything in particular. Hopefully she hadn’t hurt her head?
“Don’t worry! No one is down this road, ” She said, trying to ease any possible embarrassment she was harboring. After all, it lead to an old abandoned house. "I'm sorry, I don't thin I remember you..." She said awkwardly, blushing.

| No worries. Yeah, right. Mel couldn’t remember the last time she could honestly say she had no worries, but nevertheless she forced a nervous smile on her face and took the girl’s hand as she stood up. “Thanks.” She managed to say quietly. Mel tucked a stray strand of hair behind her ear and looked around as inconspicuously as possible, trying to see if she could make an escape. The girl’s words brought her back to reality, causing Mel to jump slightly. Why did she think Mel would care if there were people down this road, unless she was on to her because her being embarrassed was far too logical? And Mel’s fears were just reinforced when the girl mentioned that she didn’t know Mel. The blonde bit her lip, hesitating. Could she make a break for it right now? She didn’t know how fast this girl was, or if she would even care enough to chase after her, but…there was still a slight possiblilty this girl wasn’t suspicious yet, and if Mel took off running that illusion would be completely shattered. Which meant Mel was going to have to try and convince this girl nothing was up.
“Oh, uh, don’t you?” Well, that was just wonderful. Mel didn’t even know why she even bothered trying to blend in anymore; she always looked so out of place in the other districts. Maybe if she found her way into one of the upper districts she would fit in a bit more, but as long as she stayed in the lower ones it seemed Mel stuck out like a sore thumb. But still, she had no choice but the pull the usual ‘oh, I’m from here, you just don’t remember me,’ excuse, so she took a deep breath and tried her best to sound casual as she continued, “I’m sure we’ve seen each other around school before. We, uh, just must not have properly met before.” That was believable, right? Mel wasn’t sure how large District 7 was, but hopefully it was big enough that it was possible they hadn’t met before.
In an attempt to sound somewhat confident she added, “I’m Melody, but everyone calls me Mel.” The blonde had decided to quit with the fake names, at least for now. They were hard to keep track of, and she was such a bad liar, it was easier to be able to give out at least one bit of truth. With that done, Mel shuffled her feet uncomfortably and waited to see whether or not the girl chose to buy her story. At least this time she hadn’t run into a peacekeeper.
